Toddlers are very much attached to their parents. However, when the parents decide to go for work, leaving them in day-care centers, they develop anxieties, which manifest in crying and clinging. These separation anxieties are normal for some extend and are mainly due to the strong bond between them. Thus, it is important to change the loneliness feeling by encouraging the child by making independent and comfortable in the new situation. These are some of the steps to help your child from such a situation. Make sure that the methods used are simple and effective.
Explain them about the situation and the importance of taking them to the day-care centers. Give them a positive idea about the centers. Talk about the fun and games, which they are going to experience. Ask them to make new friends and play with toys. Do not focus on the point that they are away from home. Make shopping together for buying clothes and other accessories, prior to the first day of admission. They might be crying and irritable on the first day, do not scold or threaten, instead talk to the caretaker and ask them to give activities that could make them in a busy mood. Before leaving the centre give them support, hugs and kisses. Then make a quick exit. The next step is to watch the baby’s behavior for one or two days. If he shows any nightmares or extreme changes or symptoms, then think a while. The child could have any adjusting problem and may need some more time.
Using these simple steps, we could change the baby’s fear and anxiety towards a particular situation or separation from parents. Thus, we could help them to develop into an independent toddler.
